After much shuffling, and many behind the scenes changes, WOOBERG.net returns and with it, the hope of exciting changes. I have a new banner being commissioned with original artwork (of which I am responsible for the concept ...my artistic skills are that of a muse, not so much an actual artist).
Today we have an exciting article to add to the excitement of a new domain name, the final entry into the Unsung Heroes of EDH series that has been running for quite some time now. Also, in celebration of WOOBERG.net and the completion of the Unsung Heroes of EDH Series there is going to be a contest with PRIZES. Stay tunes to learn more.
Onto the last set of legends!
All but one of the 'Z' legends come from Portal 3 Kingdoms. I'm not going to reiterate in each entry how card availability limits the ability to play with all of them, but keep it in mind as I write reviews, because it is somewhat relevant.
Zhang He, Wei General
This dude is a HOUSE! Awesome evasion, CHECK! Pumps all your guys, CHECK!, in one of the best colors for EDH, CHECK!
Zhang He here has nothing but price keeping him down. If you have him, flaunt him!
Zhang Liao, Hero of Hefei
Zhang Liao here...not as awesome. In fact, slightly larger Hippy with no evasion is pretty terrible. This guy MIGHT have seen some play if he were from a different set, but he is still REALLY bad. At least he isn't [card]Gallowbraid[/card] or [card]Jedit Ojanen[/card]
Zhao Zilong, Tiger General
A 3/3 Unblockable general for five mana is never a bad thing. Another minor ability is a bonus, but not worth it's weight really. All-in-all, there are strictly better generals with horsemanship for mono-white, but like I said, unblockable is never bad.
Zhou Yu, Chief Commander
Hooray! [card]Sea Monster[/card] can be my general! Gah, this card is almost funny enough to run, and it is huge, but it doesn't seem like it would ever be the best choice. I'm not even sure you could go mono-blue soldiers...maybe with merfolk...
Zhuge Jin, Wu Strategist
OooOoo, [card]Crafty Pathmage[/card] can be my general TOO?! Not the worst legend in the world, but at least he can make ANY creature unblockable. It is only on your own turn though, so no shenanigans with opponent's creatures.
Zuberi, Golden Feather
I'm honestly supprised here. Not that Zuberi is particularly a good general, just that I figured some griffin lover would have thrown together a tribal deck with ol 'Uber here. Throw in some crazy [card]Griffin Canyon[/card] combo or something and it could do ok. Downside being that most griffins are pretty weak in EDH, but hey, not every deck has to be over 9000.
Rating: C+ (For theme deck use)
Zuo Ci, the Mocking Sage
Man was I mad when this guy and his ilk from P3K got erratta. It would be super awesome if this guy could be targeted just fine, but he could not be chosen by a [card]Clone[/card] or [card]Cytoshape[/card] to be the cloned dude. However, not only was he erratted, but now there are basically no cards in exsistance that still ask an opponent to choose a creature that do not target instead. Making Zuo Ci totally overcosted and worthless. He has an "evasion" ability that NEVER matters, and is a 1/2 hexproof for three mana. Too bad [card]Troll Ascetic[/card] makes this guy look sooooo terrible. Hell, [card]Thrun[/card] can even be your general and is better than this guy.
So here we are, at the dramatic ending of a LONG running series about Magic players' favorite variant format, and to bid it a fond farewell, WOOBERG.net (so, me) is going to have a deck-building contest.
Contestants will be choosing one of the Unsung Heroes of EDH from this series and building a deck around that commander. Players with the coolest deck that is the most fun looking, while still being able to compete with the likes of tier 2 generals ([card]Jenara[/card] for example) will win a 4th Edition [card]Nevinyrral's Disk[/card]!
Not a huge prize, I know, but certainty enough to warrant building a fun deck for EDH next week. (Gimmie a break here, cards are coming from my personal stash, and no matter how awesome I am I still do all the content here for free!)
Decks will be graded on the following criteria:
- Originality: Unique cards and card interactions are what makes playing with Unsung Heroes fun. I don't just want to see [card]Gallowbraid[/card] helming a deck of 60 staples and 40 land just to try and win "points".
- Rating of the General vs Deck Playability: The crappier rating the general got in my articles, the more likely you are to get a higher rating assuming the deck remains playable. Only make [card]Gallowbraid[/card] your general if you plan to cast him AND use him for stuff, which brings me to the next point:
- Focus on the General: The deck needs to display a clear theme that is related to the general. With all the talk of Staples and Goodstuff decks out there I want to see Generals and their armies, not a bunch of steroid pumped dudes lollygagging around where the general happens to be.

Aak! So busy these days! Work has kept me on my toes and what with the upcoming trip back to my hometown for Christmas, and my daughter being at the doctor every week lately I am so tired I could eat a cat. Well, not a jungle cat...but you know...
Next week will mark the end of the "Unsung Heroes of EDH" series of articles. I have something big planned to finish of the series in a memorable way, so stay tuned.
This week, Black cards, partially black cards and the usual suspects (Kamigawa block, Legends, P3K and Homelands). It will be no suprise that most of today's generals are under/un-played.
Strangely unrelated to [card]Scion of the Ur-Drago[/card] as far as I know, Ur here is not, what we call, a good card. He prevents a kind of evasion that is not widely popular, but does show up from time to time due to [card]Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth[/card]. Seven mana for a 4/4 first strike is underwhelming in the current days, but at least his text box isn't full of literature.
Veldrane of Sengir
Black has some sweet legends. Veldrane is not one of them. Sucking Harder than her [card]Grandmother[/card] and [card]Irini[/card], a 5/5 for seven mana is not good, a 2/5 Forestwalk for 7 is not good. I guess if EVERYONE plays green at your table, you MIGHT play with Veldrane...but even then [card]Commander Greven il-Vec[/card] is more evasive, cheaper and fatter.
Xun Yu, Wei Advisor
The only reason this card is a legend is because of the set theme it came from. the ability to pump a dude BEFORE combat is unimpressive at best and to waste your general card-slot on this dude would be depressing.
Yomiji, Who Bars the Way
Yomiji creates some interesting recursion for a Legendary themed deck. White may not have a ton to offer in this regard, but I still think Recurring [card]Flagstones of Trokair[/card] with this dude would be pretty cool. Some other Legendary white stuff that is good to recur includes [card]Jareth, Leonine Titan[/card], [card]Dark Depths[/card], [card]Grimoire of the Dead[/card], and many, many more. Be careful with Yomiji, as well. This guy can also [card]Mindslaver[/card] lock a player all by himself too.
A lot of untapped potential here, enough to make me kind of want to build a deck.
Yuan Shao, the Indecisive
Horsemanship is never a bad trait for a general. Yuan Shao's second ability looks like a decent one, but in all reality it doesn't do much. He combos with [card]Goblin War Drums[/card] and [card]Two-Headed Dragon[/card]. He is playable and I bought a copy, but I have been less than impressed with how he grants his team "evasion"
Yukora, the Prisoner
A 5/5 vanilla with a Horrible Drawback....that seems Familiar. At least his isn't cumulative.

Tacos are unrelated to EDH
Welcome back WOOBERG readers, in an attempt to finish what I have started, I plan to power through the last 3 entries to the Unsung Heroes of EDH series that has been running here on WOOBERG for many [card]moon[/card]s. This week, awesome things (besides tacos) that start with the letter T. There are quite a few of them and many are quite terrible. There is even more than one Vanilla Abomination that begins with T...however I would like to note that I am aware that [card]The Lady of the Mountain[/card] should be listed under the 'L' Section, but the sort function in MS Excel 2010 is NOT. Without further ado, I give you...
Taniwah makes me laugh, he has a funny name, a funny keyword and a funny drawback. All-in-all, Taniwah is terrible, but that doesn't mean we can't build something with him. A 7 power means he is in the "3-or-less-hits-for-a-general-damage-kill" club, and if you are playing with douche-bags, you could join in and Cast a [card]Sunder[/card] with artifact mana on a turn when all of your land is phased out. Still, not many fun applications for Taniwah here.
So, Grandeur is basically a blank ability in EDH, so let's look at what Bladewing Jr. does here. For 5 mana we get a 4/3 flying, haste dude. Papa Bladewing ([card]Rorix Bladewing[/card]) seems better almost all of the time, for 1 extra COLORLESS mana you get +2/+2. If you want to run a hastey dragon general, go with Bladewing the first.
Telim'Tor here pumps five dudes in an EDH deck, [card]Blazing Blade Askari[/card], [card]Bogardan Lancer[/card], [card]Burning Shield Askari[/card], [card]Suq'Ata Lancer[/card] and [card]Searing Spear Askari[/card]. There are a couple of cards that grant flanking as well, but are you REALLY that desperate to make a Telim'Tor deck?
The Lady of the Mountain
Vanilla Abomination...also starts with L not T...Stupid Office products.
The Unspeakable here costs 9 mana which hinders him a little bit, but for a big fat flying and trampling general, that could be ok. His last ability is pretty neat, recursion is always good, but it is quite limiting in only getting back arcane spells. Blue has a few decent ones, but they mostly only draw cards and bounce or [card]Twiddle[/card] stuff. [card]Reweave[/card] seems like a cool thing to recur, as well as [card]Heed the Mists[/card] for some theoretically huge drawing power. [card]Shifting Borders[/card] turns off or steals you some powerful non-basics, and [card]Veil of Secrecy[/card] makes for a self-Voltroning general. [card]Grozoth[/card] fetches your general if he gets tucked too!
Thriss, Nantuko Primus
Ummmm....Thiss seems boring. He is a dude that you can strap on to your other creatures for a turn. I mean, I guess having a bigger [card]Living Hive[/card] could be cool, but otherwise, wouldn't you rather deal 5 general damage than an extra 5 damage with a different creature? At seven mana, Thriss needs to do a lot more that have a tap ability that is a lot like [card]Giant Growth[/card] (which sucks in EDH).
Tivadar of Thorn
Tividar here is also on the boring side, unless your opponents' general is [card]Wort, Boggart Auntie[/card] or some such, he is basically a worse [card]Paladin en-Vec[/card]. I guess he deals with [card]Goblin Welder[/card]s.
MORE Vanilla Abominations!
[card]Lady Caleria[/card]'s evil twin costs a bit less for a bit less junk in his trunk and weaker arrows. Unfortunately, he also comes in colors that can outright kill and burn the hell out of dudes WAY better than Lady Caleria, so he is just BAD.
Torsten Von Ursus
Three Sir, THREE! Just another Vanilla Abomination.
This is just a mini, flying Thriss. The green/red flying legend role is filled by only Mr. Deathlock here (yes it is a MR, read the flavor text), plus an actual Deathlok alter would make this card pretty sweet.

Welcome back to the Unsung Heroes of EDH, a column dedicated to the Legendary Creatures in Magic that are too cool for school, and too hot to handle...well, maybe just not handled. These creatures are not currently being played as a commander by ANY user on the MTGSALVATION.COM or MTGCOMMANDER.NET boards.
Today...Lots of Snakes and even more Kamigawa legends! Also, I am noticing a pattern with Mirage block legends also showing up here a lot due to their uninteresting nature. On to the Legends!
Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro
Sachi here was once part of an infinite combo in both Standard and Kamigawa Block constructed. Her, plus [card]Orochi Leafcaller[/card] and [card]Freed from the Real[/card] is infinite mana. Also, she may kind of stink at being a snake legend, but let's not forget her second ability. In a Shaman tribal deck, Sachi plays one hell of a mana ramp game. Definately worth a second look. [card]Reach of Branches[/card] seems like a good start.
Sakiko, Mother of Summer
I really enjoy the idea of Sakiko. I had a deck starring her for the longest time, and I might build one again. The biggest problem with green is, it doesn't NEED more mana ramp. It already has done that by turn 6+ like a BOSS! On the other hand, [card]Ant Queen[/card], [card]Genisis Wave[/card] and [card]Gelatenous Genisis[/card] have been released since I have last played with this card and give me a renewed love for the idea of a Sakiko deck. [card]Wurmcalling[/card] is another that seems pretty good. If only there were outlets in green that resulted in something like card draw or whatnot. I suppose [card]Book of Rass[/card] is ok.
Sensei GT here is just too little of an effect to make much a difference. He is a 2/1 for 2 with an ability to make dudes into samurai. Samurai pumpers, and samurai in general kind of suck in EDH. He isn't as bad as some others, but he is far too boring to get played in any significant amount...also, I don't think gaining multiple instances of Bushido 1 stack.
Shimatsu the Bloodcloaked
Shimatsu here looks like he sucks a fat one on first glance, but then think of this; red has a ho-jillion ways to steal stuff until end of turn. Add all that to a deck with this bad boy and you just x-for-1'd your opponent. Additional suggestions like [card]Vedalken Orrery[/card] and [card]Winding Canyons[/card] make him even better.
Shisato, Whispering Hunter
This card is so douchie if it hits someone, but because it is a small dude with a somewhat harsh upkeep it seems "fair" i guess. Throw on a [card]Whispersilk Cloak[/card] and he starts to be a helluva lockdown. He seems "bad but usable" enough that I would try him out with things like [card]Snake Basket[/card], [card]Orochi Hatchery[/card], [card]Snake Pit[/card], [card]Endless Swarm[/card] and [card]Sosuke's Summons[/card]
LOOK! I CAN PLAY [card]SEASONED MARSHAL[/card] (with flanking) AS MY GENERAL!
Sima Yi, Wei Field Marshal
Half of a [card]Nightmare[/card] seems ok, but with [card]Korlash[/card] why would you play with Sima Yi? Sima probably even costs more money since he is from P3K. Never the best choice for a black deck, but at least he gets huge.
Sir Shandlar of Eberyn
Wow! The Vanilla Abominations were so cool looking and had great flavor...too bad they were SUPER unplayable. I guess Sir Shandlar is at least a white and green Knight Legend for your knights tribal deck these days. [card]Knight of the Reliquary[/card] says hi.
Spirit of the Night
Damn Spirit of the Night is expensive. [card]Arkoma[/card] costs one less and gets more abilities. I guess, at least Spirit of the Night is black so you can play Akroma as your general in 3 different colors now. Also, if he gets tucked there is [card]Urborg Panther[/card] and friends.
Sun Ce, Young Conquerer
[card]Riftwing Cloudskate[/card] but with better evasion and +1/+1 can be your general. Seems good, psudo-removal or a reuse a 187 creature's ability on a creature that basically reads as unblockable is very nice. Probably doesn't see play because he doesn't have flash and is from P3K so he is quite pricey.
We're getting to the end of the Unsung Heroes of EDH. It seems that the further through the alphabet we get, the worse the cards are. Maybe I am just tired of seeing such BAD cards.

Welcome back to another week of Unsung Heroes of EDH. If you are just joining me, this column is where I take a look at Legendary Creatures that no one on Mtgsalvation.com OR mtgcommander.net will admit to having piloted as a general for an EDH deck and offer up anything from suggestions, to decklists to insults depending on the crapitude of the legend. This week, since there are no legends that start with Q, we are heading on out to legends begining with Arrrrr!
Obviously a metagame choice, there are usually dragons around at the EDH table, and they usually attack. Not much to say about Rashida other than that. Generally, unless you have a [card]Karrthus[/card], [card]Scion of the Ur-Dragon[/card], and [card]Zirilan of the Claw[/card] decks all sitting at your table, Rashida will likely kill around 1-2 dudes and otherwise be a vanilla creature.
Rashka the Slayer
A 3/3 Reach for 5 with a conditional pump for blocking...and only if she is blocking black creatures? No thanks. Rashka is never the best chice for a white deck. [card]Major Teroh[/card] is better in Rashka's stead, still hozin' black and more efficiently to boot. At least she isn't [card]Morinfen[/card] or [card]Jedit Ojanen[/card]
Reveka, Wizard Savant
This card sucks a big one. The only cool thing I can think of about Reveka is Mono-Blue Tim tribal. Here is the start of a deck:
...etc, and then go to town. It won't be "good" or "win games" but it is a fun concept.
[card]Princess Lucrezia[/card]'s brother Riven is basically the same card. For 1 more mana, but less of a color commitment, you get a +0/+3 and tapping for the other color of mana. Still, he is a fat dude with a tap ability that you will never use. Better than Vanilla Abominations, but only because a huge [card]Elves of Deep Shadow[/card] in blue/black is funny.
Rohgahh of Kher Keep
God I wish this card were even moderately playable, but Rohgahh is NOT a Kobold lord...read it again...he is a [card]Kobolds of Kher Keep[/card] lord. Even with the printing of [card]Kher Keep[/card] would you REALLY want to donate your general to an opponent to pump one card in your deck, and tokens made by another? I guess you could try and find ways to trick [card]Sculpting Steel[/card] into becoming a [card]Kobolds of Kher Keep[/card] with [card]Liquimetal Coating[/card] if you arent' looking to win...or even stand a chance, but instead you could be, you know...HAVING FUN!
Ryusei, the Falling Star
Another Kamigawa dragon that is victim to the format rules, if you want to recur Ryusei, he does not make it to the graveyard, so he is just a vanilla dude, or a one time use dude. Red is the worst color at recursion, you basically have [card]Triassic Egg[/card] and [card]Phyrexian Grimoire[/card]....did I miss anything?
One of the major take-aways that I am getting from doing this series is that a TON of legends are getting little-to-no face time because of Cast/Played-from-your-hand/goes to the graveyard from the battlefield triggers. Makes me wish that the rules committee would do something so the Myojins and Kami-Dragons worked better as generals. Oh well...

This week we are looking with creatures that aren't OP (over powered if you didn't know already), but start with O and P. The video below is a clip from the movie "A Mighty Wind", which was hilarious, and inspired the title of this article. The "I don't think so!" part made us laugh so hard when we saw this mocumentary.
Interestingly, the first 5/10 of the dudes we are looking at today are white or black...interesting, I wonder if there is some strange pattern that makes names starting with O seem like white creatures and names starting with P black creatures.
Anyway, on to the next installment of...
THE UNSUNG HEROES OF EDH!
Orim, Samite Healer
Orim isn't a bad card...she just isn't a great card, or a build-around-me card. She is 3 times as good as [card]Samite Healer[/card], but Samite Healer isn't a good card. I think she could be ok in maybe a tribal clerics damage prevention themed deck, but her daughter seems better for that in most cases. (See below)
*on a side note, an unnamed [card]Master Healer[/card] is better at his job than a named character, Orim.
Oriss, Samite Guardian
Orim and her daughter here are both not seeing much EDH action. Oriss here looks like Slave Girl Leia but she plays like a generic cleric. Saving your dudes from damage is OK, but she can't do anything for players. Grandeur is worthless in EDH without crazy [card]Mirror Gallery[/card]/[card]Clone[/card]/Bounce Shenanigans. All-in-All, the apple didn't fall far from the tree, leaving Oriss in the "OK in cleric tribal or damage prevention themed decks" camp as well.
Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens
Oyobi here is another victim of SSS...Spiritcraft Sucks Syndrome. His ability would rock the house with some better spirits. Now that Innistrad is out, Maybe Oyobi here could helm a decent mono-white spirit tribal deck...something worth checking out. [card]Twilight Drover[/card], [card]Spirit of the Hearth[/card] and [card]Windborn Muse[/card] are all decent spirits for a deck like this...makes me want to try it out. Maybe Spiritcraft Sucks Syndrom is curable in mono-white.
Pang Tong, "Young Phoenix"
The epic suckage of Pang Tong here is only redeemed by his official title of "the-only-card-with-"-in-the-title." A tiny general that can't get there with General Damage and has a weak effect with a timing restriction that makes it even worse...no thanks. I can't decide where this steaming pile fits into the better-or-worse-than-[card]Morinfen[/card]-and/or-the-Vanilla-Abominations group, but he is around there with the worst of the worst legends.
Patron of the Kitsune
Why is no one playing with this card?! A 5/6 for 6 seems like a decent body, but gaining a life whenever ANY CREATURE attacks, that seems like quite a nice life buffer. You don't have to even be the one getting attacked! This card punishes opponents for being aggressive, rewards you for winning and keeps you alive.
I have been looking to trade for one of these for a while, and next time I order cards from somewhere, this dude will be in the order.
It's sad that he has no evasion, and that Fox offering is all but worthless ([card]Silverchase Fox[/card] FTW!)
Patron of the Nezumi
Another of the patrons seeing no love!? And a good card to boot! Patron of the Nezumi was even in the recently released commander products from WOTC. His ability is pretty brutal, stuff goes to the graveyard A LOT in EDH and the patron punishes people for that. [card]Sakura-Tribe Elder[/card]s and [card]Glen Elendra Archmage[/card]s will all start Timming their masters. Once again, the offering ability is all but useless, but there have to be SOME playable rats...[card]Ink-Eyes[/card]?
Big brother of the Vanilla Abominations, Pavel here got an ability when he grew up. Shitty-Firebreathing is nothing super fancy, but at least he isn't [card]Barktooth Warbeard[/card]
One of the biggest mana dorks of all time, Princess Lucrezia makes you make a decision that all but negates her ability. She is a decent sized beat-stick that wants to tap for mana...? Most of the time, if you can pay her mana cost you don't need one blue mana enough to not swing with the Princess...but who knows...it could be ....useful....right?
Purraj of Urborg
Purraj here is one that is much more hard to read. She rewards you for casting your stuff, punishes other black opponents, but eats a lot of mana while doing so. I currently have a deck in the works for her, but it is far from finished and I am not sure if she is good or not. First Strike is OK, getting fatter is OK, but she has no built in card advantage, doesn't protect herself and has no evasion...however, [card]Whispersilk Cloak[/card] exists for a reason.
Rating: B, possibly a B+ or B-
Well, that's all we have time for today, I hope this series is still interesting to people. It didn't SEEM like there would be this many unused legends with untapped potential, but it seems there are a lot of decent choices (and even more crappy ones) still out there.

Welcome back to the Unsung Heroes of EDH series. When we last left our heroes, Shoe had run out of creative titles and we were on the letter M, part one. Today, we continue where the last episode left off.
Mirri, Cat Warrior
I'm not too sure about Mirri here. She has a somewhat relevant evasion ability, can play both offense and defense, AND has first strike for 3 mana. What she doesn't have, is a big enough body to be relevant in EDH. Do I think she would make a good voltron general...Not sure. Green isn't exactly known for its synergy with equipment, but it might be fun to do some sort of Enchantress deck with Mirri at it's helm. Throw in a little [card]Mythic Proportions[/card], [card]Wurmweaver Coil[/card]. [card]Rancor[/card] and [card]Dowsing Shaman[/card] and I think we have the beginings of a very unconventional voltron deck. Makes me want to give her a shot.

Myojin of Infinite Rage
The Myojin here are all a victim of the EDH rules. They basically are vanilla overcosted giants from the command zone. This is a rule I highly would like to see changed, but I doubt it will be. So many more generals would be playable if it just counted as cast from hand. Even so, this guy is a DICK move in all but the most competative metagames if the rule were different. Not broken, just mass LD + a fatty seems good.
Myojin of Life's Web
Same problem as all of the Myojin, just doesn't DO anything as a commander. Life's Web and Night's reach are at least somewhat easy to get to your hand from the graveyard.

Not sure who is playing the white Myojin, but props to you! I'd love to see that deck work. White can recur the guy to some avail. Anyway, on to our last Unsung Hero for the day:
There is only one general choice that no one will claim that starts with the letter N. Unsuprisingly he comes from one of the top 3 sets to show up on this list, Champions of Kamigawa.
Nagao, Bound by Honor
Nagao here isn't a TERRIBLE card. If you are into tribal samurai he is a decent choice of general compared to ...say...[card]Kentaro, the Smiling Cat[/card], but there just aren't enough good samurai to make a deck, but at least he isn't [card]Gallowbraid[/card].
Quickly running out of inventive titles, but not out of content. There are so many legends that start with the letter 'M' that no one will admit to using that I had to split it into two articles. Granted, the 5 Myojin from Kamigawa helped this count a lot, but its still a large number.
Ma Chao, Western Warrior
Five mana for a 3/3 unblockable general isn't bad. His abilities may be redundant, but he could feasibly make a powerful voltron style general. His price tag and rarity are likely what is keeping him underplayed.
A wrath, but only for black creatures, that exiles all that it slays doesn't seem TOO terrible. He is a bit over-costed being such a small creature, but he does have evasion. If you have a lot of problems with reanimator he could be a good choice. At worst he is an over-costed evasive dude that can't be stolen, at best he is a one-sided wrath effect that prevents recursion.
Maraxus of Keld
Maraxus has actually been at the helm of one of my favorite decks for a long time. He wins me a lot of games with general damage and is often a REALLY fat dude as long as you don't play anything until after combat. Slap any equipment on him and he gets CRAZY. If you are interested, here is my List.
Apparently [card]Hunding Gjornersen[/card] was Timeshifted to the proper colors...in the same set. Possibly a worse card simply because he is actually in the right colors (and doesn't have a silly name to keep him cool), the slight power and toughness shift didn't help either, making a slightly aggressive rampage dude get slightly less aggressive seems bad. Barely better than the Vanilla Abominations.
Ever wonder what it would be like to play [card]Overrun[/card] as a general...But in red? Well, Mr. Stromgald here is just that. He almost always dies in combat (unless you maze your own dude, but he is still a force to be reckoned with.
Masako the Humorless
I tried really hard to make a good Masako deck, the problem with her as a general is threefold. One, she cannot likely attack for the win, as she is average of stats for her abilities. Two, most of the big fat dudes in white that would want to block while tapped have vigilance anyway. Truth be told, often she is just a 2/1 with flash for 3 due to all of the best EDH creatures having vigilance. Three, Banding creatures are all crummy in EDH. I tried out a Banding deck with Masako, but truthfully, I couldn't get there for the win. I was hard as hell to kill, but I never wanted to smash for any damage because it would always put me in such a crippling position because my biggest creature was a 3/3. Masako has potential, but a lot of new cards need to come out before she is a good general.
Masumaro, First to Live
[card]Multani,[/card] basically makes this dude suck. 'Nuff Said.
Meloku the Clouded Mirror
Here is a legend that made for a great tournament card and I have no idea why no one is playing him as a general. He creates a TON of flying tokens to block and smash face with, AND he can recur/protect lands. I made a Meloku deck once, but since mono-blue tends to draw the hate I no longer play with it. I don't even know what I used in the deck. People should give Meloku a chance, he/she/it is a good card.
Meng Huo, Barbarian King
Meng Huo isn't a bad card, he is just not all that useful in his color. Green creatures tend to be fat as it is and adding 1 to their stats just doesn't end up doing much. That said, aside from his price tag (Due to P3K's lack of a US print run) Meng Huo could be playable. He is a reasonable size and pumps all your dudes. Makes [card]Force of Savagery[/card] seem pretty fun.
After having written last week's article, one of our playgroup members had a friend in from out of town who had a Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet deck, so it looks like that unsung hero is getting Sung/Sang? by someone. On the the potential Commanders that start with L. Most of them are either from P3K (Thanks to the Lu family being a major part of the story) or Ladies from legends/P3K who's names needed to be sure that you knew that they were in fact lades an not dudes or monsters. Lots of coincidences this week, and the more I think about them, the less they seem coincidental. Of course a lot of the underused/sub-par generals will be from Legends/P3K/Kamigawa block. That's where they were printed because the sets focused on Legends as a theme and had to have SOME cards that weren't stupid good like most legends from non-focused sets.
Really big [card]D'Avenant Archer[/card] is not the greatest card in the world, however there is not another Green and White legend I can think of that kills or deals damage to creatures so this card serves a neat niche. She is, in fact, removal, and in archer tribal deck with cards like [card]Greatbow Doyen[/card] and all the archers you can come up with to tap for damage, Ms. Caleria could be for a fun theme deck but the power level would NOT be particularly high.
One of the many P3K legends that are just bad Legendary versions of normal cards, Mrs. [card]Wizard Mentor[/card] here can save your dudes from attacks I guess, but really her ability forces you to re-cast here and [card]Barrin, Master Wizard[/card] along with many other mono-blue legends protect your other creatures much better than Lady Sun here and with a fatter body and a possibility of doing some damage as well.
Lady Zhurong, Warrior Queen
I can only surmise that a 4/3 unblockable green Legend is not played due to the fact that this card is super rare and super expensive. Were I able to get my hands on this card, I would play it all over the place.
Latulla, Keldon Overseer
Back when general damage could come from non-combat damage, I could see Latulla getting some love. These days she is mostly card disadvantage for a decent, but mediocre effect. Granted, there are some tolerable on-color madness cards and [card]Squee,[/card] but really, there are so many ways to burn face and dudes in mono-red that Latulla will never be first pick for a deck's general. She isn't horrible but isn't great either.
I actually have Lieutenant Kirtar deck. He is not a particularly build-around-me general, but repeatable exile removal on an evasive body seems good. The deck I have for him is Meekstone themes and all of the creatures in it are either power 2 or less or do something with low CMC or low powered creatures. Here is the list, although I have changed the general to [card]Pianna[/card]
Linessa, Zephyr Mage
Here is an example (in the same article even) of "Better than [card]Lady Sun[/card]." Grandeur is totally worthless in EDH, and her ability is expensive but isn't the worst. Conditional removal for a ton of mana, alongside a bit of recursion for creatures with "Enters the Battlefield" triggers seems ok, but not fantastic.
Liu Bei, Lord of Shu
Here is a general with horsemanship you won't hear me praise. Expensive, over-costed and pumped by two more expensive cards that probably make better generals than Liu Bei here (well [card]Zhang Fei, Fierce Warrior[/card] anyway), he just doesn't make the cut. Play with Zhang Fei instead.
Lu Meng, Wu General
Hmmm....Unblockable 4 power general. Seems ok. Slap a [card]Greaves[/card] on this dude and he goes to TOWN! Add in some other equipment and Lu Meng is a crazy good mono-blue Voltron general. [card]Sun Quan, Lord of Wu[/card] is better, but this card will draw a little less hate.
Lu Su, Wu Advisor
[card]Azami[/card] will always put this dude in her shadow. Bad [card]Archivist[/card] is not a good general. Then again, if you want to play Azami and not get hosed immediately, I guess Lu Su is sort of like that....I guess...
Lu Xun, Scholar General
I actually quite like Lu Xun here. Legendary [card]Thieving Magpie[/card] is a pretty cool concept. Throw in the fact that Horsemanship is more like Unblockable than flying and you have a win. Slap a [card]Loxodon Warhammer[/card] on him and he not only gives you gas, but gives you wins as well. Blue is the best color for protecting a lone creature as well so, as far as winning with general damage goes. Lu Xun is a REALLY strong candidate for such a low power.
The title of today's article has very little to do with EDH, but it was the first thing I could think of when I was stuck naming something with the letter 'K'. It's a spoof on the maind boss villain King K. Rool from Donkey Kong country, and after you beat him the first time the Kredits run with every word starting with a K.
This made me wish that there was a Legendary Creature - Crocodile. That would make such a cool general. I wish WOTC would spend a little more time making generals that are a little more quirky like the legends of yore, both flavorwise and ability set. These days it seems like they focus too much on makeing splashy, powerful legends that they don't make ones that really need a deck to be built around them. Most of the commanders from the new Commander products are all kind of obvious in thier implimentation, and it makes me wish some of them were a little more quirky. The Red-White-Blue deck is one of my favorites since the generals that are new are both quirky and try to make you do interesting things that otherwise would be considered bad deckbuilding and/or bad plays. Anyway, ON TO THE UNUSED GENERALS!
Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet
I'm sure SOMEONE has made a deck outta Kalitas. He is from one of the most recent blocks, however, no one admitted to building a deck out of him on MTGSalvation or on the EDH forums, so here he is. He seems pretty strong. Kills any creature just like [card]Visara[/card], he is a little smaller and without evasion, but for a little mana the creature he distroys becomes a threat on your team as well. Seems like a really strong dude.
Likely the high density of cool mono-black legends has some effect on how much Kalitas sees play.
Kasimir the Lone Wolf
Vanilla Abomination...Nothin to see here ya lookie-loo's
Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs
Kazuul is another newer legend that doesn't see a lot of love. He was heavily discussed as a general when Worlwake was new, but no one seemed to use him much. He works a lot like a red [card]Propaganda[/card] in the early game, and a token generator in the late game. With sacrifice outlets ([card]Goblin Bombardment[/card] for example) his Ogre-ie minions can take out creatures that actually see play in EDH, and will trigger a [card]Stalking Vengeance[/card] too. All in all, Kazuul suffers only from being a good control card in a color that has problems being a control deck in multiplayer. Definately a fun card with a potential for power.
Kentaro, the Smiling Cat
Kentaro here is a casualty to the EDH rules. He makes playing off color samurai easier on the mana base...only one problem, you can't even PLAY with off color samurai in an EDH deck. In the end, Kentaro only makes sure you are never color-screwed with samurai...which aren't that strong in multiplayer due to them all being 3/3-ish or smaller.
Kiyomaro, First to Stand
Kiyomaro seems pretty ok. White sucks a bit at card draw, but there are enough artifacts around that can make up for that. He has the ability to get stupid huge, but without the ability to gain any evasion he just doesn't quite make it. Looking at the picture, I was sure he got flying instead of Vigilance at 4+ cards, but alas, he is not as awesome as I had imagined. He is worth giving a shot. Gaining Life and getting a fatter general for drawing cards (something you want to do anyway) seems like it is strong enough to be a contender.
Kodama of the Center Tree
There are a few playable green spirits out there, but not enough to make this guy super fat without playing sub-par cards. That being said, he can recurr himself from the graveyard if you have 5+ spirits out. I would consider making a tribal spirits deck in mono-green if i thought I could get him to be super fat, but I just don't think the support is there. There are only 50-ish playable spirits and a lot of them are bad. I do still love the trifecta of [card]Loam Dweller[/card], [card]Elder Pine of Jukai[/card] and [card]Soilshaper[/card], which would make this dude a lot of fun.
Kodama of the South Tree
Another Spiritcraft centric green legend. With the appropreate amout of spiritcraft and token generation, I could see this mini-overrun effect be useful. Not sure how good it could be but it might be fun. Another one worth an experiment, but not something I would consider to be even "casual top tier". Threw together a deck for this guy to see how it works out.
The first thing I thought of when I opened this guy from a pack is the word that Moogles call pretty much everyone and every thing in final fantasy games. He will forever be Kupo, Pitlord in my mind and this has given me an unfounded love for the friendsl, fluffy Demon of life loss and killing dudes. It should come to no suprise that I have a decklist for Kupo here, although I have not played with it in some time. He is REALLY expensive, so you have to ramp pretty hard, but he is a super powerful beatstick AND creature control in one package. Kupo needs Magus of the Coffers or Cabal Coffers to be online almost 100% of the time to be effective, but he is GOOOD if you can get him out reliably. Here is my Kupo list, for those interested.
